The “Assisi Serafica Bellezza” project entails a series of integrated services aimed at promoting and enhancing not only the sites belonging to the Assisi Municipal Museum Circuit but the entire territory as well.
Rocca Maggiore stands atop Mount Asio overlooking the city of Assisi. The fortress has a trapezoidal shape with angular towers. Inside, the main tower stands out, from whose summit visitors can admire an extraordinary view of the city and the valley, from Perugia to Spoleto.
In the noble floor rooms of Palazzo Vallemani, a splendid Baroque residence a few steps from the Basilica of San Francesco, works belonging to the Assisi Municipal Art Gallery are displayed. Among the most valuable pieces in the collection, it’s worth mentioning the Madonna enthroned with Child attributed to Giotto and certainly the most modern disciple of Giotto, the Virgin with Child, detached from Porta San Giacomo and attributed to the young Perugino.
Assisi preserves numerous ancient testimonies, foremost among them being the Forum, located beneath the current Piazza del Comune, dominated by the Roman Temple of Minerva (1st century BC). In addition to the rich archaeological collection, the remains of the Forum include the temple’s base, a cistern, a podium with seats for magistrates, and a tetrastyle temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux.
