Deruta Regional Ceramics Museum is the oldest Italian museum for ceramics; established in 1898, it preserves over 6000 works and is housed in the convent complex of San Francesco, in the historic center of Deruta. The museum documents, in particular, the Deruta production of the 15th and 16th centuries, a period which saw the city’s potters and painters participate directly in the art of the Italian Renaissance. The visit route also allows access to the numerous deposits located in a dedicated structure where further Deruta works from the 14th to the 20th century are preserved and, furthermore, to some 15th-16th century kilns for firing ceramics, testifying to the flourishing activity of the fifty kilns active in the 16th century, now included in the visit itinerary.
