The Square represents the most significant sacred space in the city of Volterra, where the Cathedral, the Bell Tower, the House of the Opera, the Oratory of Mercy, the ancient Hospital, and the Baptistery overlook, giving their name to this significant area of the urban fabric. The Cathedral of Volterra, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was consecrated on May 20, 1120, by Pope Callistus II. The interior, divided into three naves, features a late Renaissance-style Latin cross basilica layout, the result of various renovations over the centuries. The Baptistery of San Giovanni, with an octagonal plan, has been documented since at least 1161. The façade, with its access portal, is clad in bands of white and green marble, following the Romanesque-Gothic style, and dates back to the thirteenth century. The complex of the Ancient Hospital of Santa Maria Maddalena, already documented in the twelfth century, has undergone far-sighted restoration aimed at bringing to light the Etruscan, Roman, and medieval vestiges preserved there, as well as hosting an Exhibition Study Center where donations of ancient and contemporary works of art are displayed.
The ticket is valid for two consecutive days.
Please note that the opening hours of the Duomo may vary unexpectedly due to activities related to liturgy.
