Carlos Garaicoa’s work has evolved and contributed to a dialogue between art and urban space, subsequently investigating the social structure of our cities in terms of architecture and space utilization. His work embraces many different disciplines while addressing issues related to culture and politics through a Cuban and European lens. His primary subject has always been the city of Havana, where he was born, raised, and studied. Now, living and working in Madrid, his work can be interpreted and applied in many global urban contexts. His sculptures, drawings, videos, and photographs find a way to critique utopian modernist architecture and the ideologies of the 20th century associated with it, examining the city as a symbolic space representative of our social fabric.
