Sinagoga, the new Jewish Temple of Florence, inaugurated in 1882, is one of the most significant examples in Europe of the exotic Moorish style with Arab, Egyptian, and Byzantine elements. The assimilation of Christian basilica models and ancient Spanish synagogues reflects the atmosphere of Emancipation, which the Jews obtained with the Unification of Italy in 1861, and the desire to assert their identity through a style and architecture independent of the surrounding world.
