The complex of the Musei Civici encompasses the most important sites in the architectural and cultural landscape of San Gimignano. In the Town Hall, visitors can admire significant cycles of paintings, such as the knightly-inspired one in the famous Sala di Dante, so-called for hosting the presence of the great poet, and the Pinacoteca Civica featuring masterpieces of the Sienese and Florentine schools. Climbing the Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in the city, visitors will be amazed not only by the panorama but also by an exceptional series of 14th-century frescoes depicting love stories. The Cathedral is undoubtedly among the most significant monuments of San Gimignano. The walls of the basilica-shaped church are entirely covered with frescoes depicting the Stories of the Old and New Testament painted by illustrious painters of the Sienese school of the 14th century. The itinerary includes the medieval church of San Lorenzo in Ponte, entirely decorated with a cycle of frescoes depicting the afterlife through suggestive details of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The complex also includes a visit to the Archaeological Museum documenting the origins of the city, the Spezieria di Santa Fina with precious “pharmacy” vessels still containing ancient medicinal preparations, and the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery.
The ticket is valid for two consecutive days.
The opening hours of the Cathedral may also vary suddenly due to activities related to liturgy.
